European Card Payment Association (ECPA)

ECPA represents β€œdomestic card schemes” and organisations managing essential functions such as type approval within the European Economic Area.

The Creation

To this effect, ECPA:

  • Monitors, evaluatesΒ  and responds to relevant legislation proposed in the EEA,
  • Maintains a dialogue on behalf of its Members with organisations such as the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European Central Bank, the Euro Retail Payments Board, the European Banking Authority,Β  EMVCo, and PCISSC and other National, European or International bodies which are active in relevant areas of interest of its Members, including but not limited to legislation, securityΒ  and standardisation concerning cards, card transactions and similar payment instruments.

Membership of ECPA is open to

  • Card schemes whose brand is currently used only within the European Economic Area (EEA) and which are commonly known as β€œdomestic card schemes” ;
  • Organisations which manage essential functions such as type approval only within the European Economic Area (EEA).

ECPA Members include

  • Bancontact-Payconiq Company (Belgium), Borica-Bcard (Bulgaria), Groupement des Cartes Bancaires β€œCB” (France), Nets-Dankort (Denmark),Β  SIBS MB (Portugal), Sistema de Tarjetas y Medios de Pago (Spain), and Bankid BankAxept (Norway)
  • UK Finance,Β  Betaalvereniging Nederland (the Dutch Payments Association), and the Pan-Nordic Card Association.
  • Business Associates include BKM (Turkey) and NSPK (Russia … currently suspended because of events in Ukraine).

Our meetings

ECPA Meetings take place under a set of agreed Anti-Trust Guidelines

The purpose of the European Card Payment Association (ECPA) is to represent the interests of its members in discussions concerning EU regulation that impacts the use and / or users of payment cards or similar payment instruments, including measures intended to promote the creation of a single European market for card payments.

Attendance at meetings is solely for the above-mentioned goal and not the occasion to share commercial or competitive information, or any information regarding an ECPA member and /or its respective members which is not publicly available, and must not constitute or propose restrictions of competition in any form whatsoever.
